F M Alexander, an Australian actor, developed the Technique over 100 years ago
as a result of solving a persistent vocal problem.
His technique helped not only performing artists, but anyone with physical, mental
or emotional conditions resulting from engrained habits. He won support from influential
doctors in Sydney and in the early 1900's was confident enough to move to London (financed
by a 150-1 horse racing bet!).
In London Alexander was again successful, establishing himself with doctors and performing artists,
writing four books, dividing his time between Britain and the USA and, of course, training other
people to teach.
Below there's a good video (8 mins) of a famous teacher, Marjorie Barstow, which captures the
early history of the Alexander Technique in Britain.
