Introducing the Alexander Technique

Ask different teachers what the Alexander Technique is and you'll get slightly different answers: - the Alexander Technique is a technique, not a philosophy. Nonetheless, here's an answer:

The Alexander Technique is a way of achieving ease and freedom of movement, of achieving good use of your self, largely by unlearning unhelpful habits.

Notice that it's a process of learning to act, whilst toning down our habits. This opens the possibility of acting in new ways which you can experience through the guidance of a skillful teacher or, with experience, on your own. The emphasis in Alexander-work is on discovering the right action for the moment, keeping your habitual self "out of the way".

Since AT is a way of performing actions, rather than a particular exercise, it can be applied to any act. In the following pages some of the applications of AT are described. Take the time to watch the video below (split into two parts for convenience).
